Dubai hotels and restaurants will now be able to serve alcohol in
their food, after the Dubai Municipality described last week’s apparent
ban as “a misunderstanding”.

Hoteliers and restaurateurs received a Dubai Municipality circular
last week that clearly said that alcohol in food would be strictly
prohibited.

The move sparked an outcry in the hospitality industry, with chefs
fearing huge losses if they were forced to remove all alcohol from
foods. Alcohol is a common ingredient in sauces and desserts.

Chefs from some of the major hotels approached the municipality on
Sunday, asking for a review of the decision.

The municipality has since denied there was a ban and said hotels
and restaurants had misunderstood its circular. It says that foods
containing alcohol will still be allowed, provided they are separated
from other foods as with other non-halal products and clearly labeled.
